QTVR

This web site has been designed to be enjoyed using as wide a variety of browsers as possible. We have deliberately avoided temptation to rely on the latest non-standard whizzo extensions! If you are using Netscape 2.0 or later or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later you will have no problems. If you are using an older browser there should be no significant impact - the helpful javascript hints on the status bar may not appear and the kids' zone won't have a right hand frame; the lecture theatre works most effectively if your browser executes javascript but it will revert to an almost as effective (but slower) mechanism if you can't.
We've now succumbed to the wonders of Quicktime VR. To view these movies you'll need the Quicktime plug-in (which comes with Netscape Navigator) or a standalone QTVR viewer from Apple.
Maximise your browser window; the pages will look cramped at much less than full width on a 640 x 480 screen.
Most of the images have been saved as JPEGs to enable the photographic quality of the originals to be retained, so set your screen to the maximum colour depth you can support - 24 bit true colour is the ideal but if you only have 256 colours it should still dither to an acceptable image.
Some of the images deserve to be large! and so you may find they take a while to download. We have attempted to alleviate this with intelligent pre-fetch but we can't always predict what order you'll view pages in. But do wait, they're worth it (only 2 images are more than 50K and most are under 24K so the wait shouldn't be too long). The Quicktime VR files are, however, rather big so you can see the details (for example the basilica is 800K).
